Fort Worth Police Officer Eases Immigrants’ Concerns Through Viral Video

FORT WORTH  (WBAP/KLIF News) – In a video that has been viewed more than 1 million times, Officer Daniel Segura of the Fort Worth Police Department told immigrants “We are going to protect you.”

Segura said more and more members of the Spanish-speaking community have been asking him questions about their status since President Donald Trump issued executive orders on immigration and the border.

So he took matters into his own hands and posted a nearly six-minute long video on Facebook called “Calma Amigos!” (Calm down, friends!).

“If you are a victim of a crime, we don’t care about your immigration status, you have the same rights as anyone else who lives in Fort Worth. We are going to defend you. We are going to protect you,” said Segura.

Segura told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that police departments need to do a better job of informing the public about how cases involving immigrants will be handled.

He said, “In the City of Fort Worth, for many, many years, we have not enforced immigration laws. We are not federal officers who enforce immigration laws, I want to make this very clear.”

In a statement responding to the video, Mayor Betsy Price said, “Fort Worth follows federal immigration laws and unequivocally not a sanctuary city,” she said.

The Fort Worth Police Department also released a statement, that said Segura’s video was meant to address citizen concerns and not to “represent the views of the City of Fort Worth on immigration or compliance with immigration policies.”
