PLANO (WBAP & KLIF News) — Two Plano Police officers who found roughly 20 Amazon boxes tucked away in a West Plano condo took it upon themselves to be good Samaritans.
Police say the officers were responding to a call that reported suspicious-looking packages. It turns out, they were all boxes belonging to different Plano residents, though they are unsure if the boxes were stolen or simply delivered to the wrong address.
Officer David Tilley says protocol was for the cops to submit the packages to headquarters, which would mean it could have been several days before the recipients could receive their orders.
But the on-duty, overnight officers had a different plan.
“The concern was that there might be some medication in there that somebody’s waiting on,” Tilley said. “Or, some important package that they would need right away.”
Because Tilley said it was a slow night, the officers decided to deliver the packages themselves to the intended recipients. And while it’s unknown if there was indeed medicine in one of the boxes, their good deed did in fact make a difference in at least one family’s life.
It just so turns out that one of the packages contained a birthday present for a young boy whose birthday was the very next day.
“We do take a lot of pride in making sure our officers understand that the main thing you want to do is what you feel is the right thing to be done at that time,” Tilley said. “The easy way would have been to take them over and lock them into property [headquarters] and be done. This took a little more time, a little more effort on their part, but they felt their decision was that this was the right thing to do.”
