Some DFW Supermarkets Closed for #DayWithoutImmigrants

DALLAS (WBAP & KLIF News) — A grocery store with 14 DFW Locations is participating in today’s “day without immigrants” protests.

El Rancho Supermarket has put up signs on their doors saying they’re closed today and will reopen tomorrow, which made one shopper who showed up at 7:00 am to buy bread pretty unhappy.

“The business has nothing to do with immigration. It’s stupid,” he said. “The boss needs the money.”

The shopper, who was turned away by employees inside the locked South Dallas store, was of Mexican descent and spoke broken English. He said protesting by shutting down businesses is unfair to those doing their grocery shopping.

“People need to buy something – people who probably agree with supporting the illegals,” he said. “But they need their food.”

Employees were inside the South Dallas El Rancho working, with some showing up just before 7:00 am and entering the locked, sliding glass door with a key. They did not comment on what type of work they were doing with the store closed to customers.

The day of protest, marked by the hashtag #daywithoutimmigrants, is designed to show people what society is like without a large number of immigrants working, at school, or in the community.

“The protesting is stupid. That’s all,” the shopper said. “They don’t know nothing.”
