AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) — There are an estimated 2.5 million wild hogs in Texas and state Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has just declared war on them. He says he plans to bring about a feral hog “apocalypse” by poisoning them
Wild hogs cause an estimated $1.5 billion dollars damage annually to crops nationwide. Miller told the Austin American-Statesman, “They’re so prolific, you can’t hardly keep them in check.”
In approving the use of the pesticide warfarin to poison the porkers, Miller declared, “This is going to be the hog apocalypse, if you like: If you want them gone, this will get them gone.”
The ag commissioner has previously introduced a law allowing hunters to shoot wild pigs from helicopters. He says the poison product approved for use statewide, called “Kaput Feral Hog Lure”, doesn’t pose a large threat to other animals because it is especially deadly to hogs and other critters would need to ingest a much higher dosage to suffer any harm.
Unsurprisingly, the Texas Hog Hunters Association doesn’t like the plan. It will make their sport more challenging and spokesman Eydin Hansen told CBS he’s worried that he could wind up feeding poisoned pork to his family. Miller says that won’t be a problem because poisoned hogs will turn bright blue.
