Arlington Cuts Ribbon on New Overpass

Arlington (WBAP/KLIF News) – Arlington and the Texas Department of Transportation have cut the ribbon on an overpass that will provide another path across Interstate 20 near the Arlington Highlands. The bridge at Center Street has two lanes in each direction and can be expanded to six lanes total.

“The destination of the Highlands has become a great area for people to come, hang out, eat, shop and come together,” says Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams. “They’ve been a great community partner.”

Arlington paid $11 million for the overpass. TxDot oversaw construction.

Williams says the Center Street bridge will make Cooper and Matlock Streets less congested. He says the bridge has already led to increased interest on the eastern side of the Highlands.

“We have brand new businesses that have opened up in anticipation of this bridge being completed,” he says.

Developers say a national chain has shown interest in land along Center Street with the addition of another north-south route.

“I’m from Chicago, and things don’t happen up there the way they do here,” says Arlington Highlands’ David Harvey. “You guys made a decision to get this built, and you got it built.”

The bridge includes two lanes in both directions, along with a path for walkers and cyclists. The overpass can be expanded to a total of six lanes.
