FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Fort Worth Police Department is stressing the need for residents to use its safe exchange zones after a mother was gunned down in front of her husband and son while selling a game console.
It happened at the Somerset Apartment Complex in West Fort Worth on Sunday.
Investigators say witnesses told police they heard multiple shots and saw a masked gunman running from the scene.
Officer Tamera Valle said the murder is a tragic reminder of the importance of the safe exchange zones. She said it’s difficult to tell whether someone is behind honest online but there are some tips that could keep you out of danger.
“Never meet anyone at your home or their home. Always try to go to a public place where there will be people around. Just in case something does go down, you’ll have witnesses. People are more unlikely to commit a crime when there are other people around,” said Valle.
She said if you feel uneasy about the transaction, trust your instincts.
“Just don’t do it. You can text that person or however you contacted them and let them know I don’t really feel comfortable about this can we meet somewhere else or can we do this on another day. You might not get the money or the item but at least you know you’re going to be safe,” said Valle.
Last year, two women were killed in Dallas and Arlington while selling goods to an online buyer.
The department has four safe exchange zones that are open to citizens:
Bob Bolen Public Safety Complex 505 West Felix St.
3128 Bolt Street – South Division
4651 N. Main Street – North Division
1100 Nashville Avenue – East Division
