PLANO (WBAP/KLIF News) — A daycare worker in Plano is expected to turn herself in Tuesday after a video surfaced showing her push a toddler, pick him up, then drop him on his face.
It happened at The Children’s Courtyard daycare in northwest Plano. The daycare said in a statement the employee is no longer with the company.
In about 48 hours after posting the video, it had been viewed more than 800,000 times.
“It was disturbing,” said David Tilley of the Plano Police Department. “When you saw her push the child down, that was a little bit concerning to me. But whenever she actually lifted the child up and dropped him, that’s the one that probably put it over the edge for most people.”
Tilley said once word surfaced of the video to Plano Police, they immediately had an investigator look into the situation. He said the woman, Jazmine Torres, was compliant with police, agreeing to speak to the investigator on Monday and then agreeing to turn herself in by the end of the day Tuesday.
She’s facing a child endangerment charge, which carries a punishment up to a $10,000 fine and two years in jail. The child was hospitalized, but because he was not injured, Tilley said it is classified as a state-jail felony, as opposed to a third degree felony had the child been hurt.
Either way, it’s a situation that would be troubling to any parent, according to Tilley.
“When you leave your child in the care of someone else, whether it’s a daycare center, a school, a family member or baby-sitter, that’s always something you worry about or concern yourself with,” Tilley said.
