5 People Rescued from House Explosion in Navarro County

DAWSON  (WBAP/KLIF News) – Three people were air-lifted to Parkland Hospital in Dallas after a house exploded late Thursday night.

It happened around 11 along West Highway in Dawson, about 70 miles south of Dallas.

The Navarro County Sheriff’s Department said when emergency crews arrived, five people were trapped inside the burning, partially-collapsed home. Two adults were treated on the scene and released.

The explosion  was so powerful, it knocked out almost a dozen windows at a church across the street.

Neighbor Richard Raines told WFAA TV he heard a loud boom, jumped in his truck and rushed to the scene.

“You come up here. It’s a bad situation…there’s not much there. You can’t just leave them in there. If there friends and neighbors, you don’t want to leave them in there,” he said.

When he arrived at the house, he could hear people inside calling for help.

“I got out of the pickup, went to the window and hollered in. Two people answered me and I tried to tell them to calm down and we’re going to get them out,” he said.

Raines said some of the neighbors had recently been complaining about the smell of gas in the area.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion.
