North Texas Criminology Professor Weighs in on Workplace Shootings

Dallas police evacuated an office building after a gunman opened fire Monday morning.

STEPHENSVILLE (WBAP/KLIF News) – A workplace shooting in Dallas that left two people dead Monday morning, has brought the topic of workplace safety back to the forefront.

Dr. Alex Del Carmen, head of the school of criminology at Tarleton State University, said when police arrive at a shooting location they have to quickly assess the situation.

“The first thing they have to do is find out where the threat is. Meaning how many people are involved, what type of ammunition this individual or individuals may have, where they are out and how to save lives at the same time,” he said.

Del Carmen said if there is a shooting at your workplace, you should barricade yourself in a safe place and call for help.

“Stay on the line until you possible can to let 911 know where you are, what you are doing and what you are hearing. All of that information will help first responders neutralize the threat while at the same time ensure that your life is being saved by them not interpreting that you are in fact a threat,” he said.

Although workplace shootings are occurring more often, Del Carmen said people should not live their lives in fear.
