AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – A suspect has been arrested after four students were stabbed on the University of Texas at Austin campus Monday afternoon.
One person was found dead at the scene and three others were taken to area hospitals with potentially serious injuries.
Emergency crews responded to the scene near Gregory Gym at on Speedway Drive just after 1:49 p.m.
University of Texas at Austin Police Chief David Carter said when officers arrived on scene, they managed to find the suspect, identified as Kendrex J. White, who was armed with a large hunting knife and walking away from one of the victims.
He said the responding officer confronted White, ordered him on the ground and arrested him.
Carter said the suspect’s motive or his relation to the victims is unknown.
“We have upwards of 25 witnesses, most of which are students on campus. So, we have to take care of them and get the information from them. So, his motivation, what was going through his mind, I don’t know at this time,” he said.
Carter said there is no longer a threat to the community. However, the mood on campus is still one of shock and sorrow.
University President Gregory Fenvez said that both students and staff are standing with the victims and their families.
“At this time of this awful tragedy, our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and the families of this incredibly senseless attack. This breaks my heart to announce this, that any of our students are touched by tragedy,” he said.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
