Irving Police Kill Suspect Holding Wife at Knifepoint

IRVING (WBAP/KLIF News) – An Irving police officer shot and killed a man who was allegedly holding his wife at knifepoint Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 6:18 a.m. at a home in the 1400 block of South Story Road.

Officer James McLelland said officers responded after a woman called 911 to report that her husband was trying to kill her with a knife.

He said the suspect had cut the victim and barricaded them both in an upstairs bedroom.

When police ordered the man to drop his knives, McLelland said he refused.

“Realizing that this was obviously a situation where not only officers but the wife was in immediate danger of being seriously injured, one officer discharged his duty weapon striking the suspect,” he said.

The man’s wife suffered non-life threatening injuries. The four responding officers, who were not injured, have been placed on temporary leave.

“To give them adequate time to go through debriefing and be deemed fit to return to duty. The officer that did fire has a much more intensive process with interviewing with our internal affairs staff,” he said.

The identities of the suspect and officers involved have not been released.
