DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Senator Don Huffines’ (R-Dallas) bill that would allow first responders to arm themselves with a handgun while on duty has passed the Senate.
To carry the gun legally, the first responder would have to get a License to Carry (LTC) and complete a 20-hour, on-duty first responder training course that will be approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Huffines told WFAA TV this bill is about the ability of first responders to protect themselves in the event of danger.
“They work very hard…I think it’s common sense to make sure that they don’t become a victim,” he said.
He said the bill will allow them to carry in restricted areas but civilians shouldn’t worry because they’ll be properly trained.
Huffines bill hit home for many Dallas residents after a paramedic was shot by a lone gunman while responding to a victim Monday afternoon.
Dallas Fire Rescue said that William An, who had previously been in critical but stable condition at Baylor University Medical Center, is getting better and has been talking with family and colleagues.
The shooter, identified as Derick Lamont Brown, was found dead in a house near the crime scene. Police also found his deceased roommate, who investigators say Brown killed, in the home.
Huffines’ bill has a few more legal hurdles to go through before it can become a law.
