IRVING (WBAP/KLIF News) — Thousands of Mormons are leaving the Boy Scouts of America in order to create their own program.
Thursday, the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints announced that as many as 185,000 youths would be leaving the Irving based organization and starting their own program. The church said in a statement that the split from the organization had nothing to do with the Boy Scout’s decision to allow gay troop leaders in 2015, because Mormon-sponsored troops where still allowed to enforce their own policies.
Currently, there are 2.3 million youths participating in Boy Scouts, but the organization has seen dwindling membership for years. The Mormon Church claims to want a more simplified program that is tailored to Mormon teenagers.
