Federal Judge Dismisses “Clock Boy” Lawsuit

IRVING (WBAP/KLIF News) – A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the father of a boy who was arrested when he brought a homemade clock to school in September 2015.

Ahmed Mohammed was a student at MacArthur High School in Irving.

He had made a clock using a circuit board and digital display and brought the clock to school to show his teachers.

One of his teachers thought the clock might be a bomb and alerted the administration. Mohammed was arrested and charged with making a hoax bomb.

The charge was dropped but his father filed a discrimination lawsuit against the Irving Independent School District, MacArthur High School’s principal, the City of Irving and Irving Mayor Beth Van Duyne.

He claimed officials were libelous in their statements and had violated his son’s civil rights.

Van Duyne had been dropped as a defendant in the lawsuit back in February.

Judge Sam Lindsay of the U.S District Court for the Northern District of Texas dismissed the suit saying Mohammed’s attorneys did not prove he was treated differently because of his religion.

Lawyers for Irving ISD put out a statement saying “school and principals make decisions on student safety every day…and this opinion confirms there was no suggestion of discriminatory intent.”

At the time of the incident, Mohammed’s story grew into a social media firestorm and the hashtag “IStandWithAhmed” emerged as a show of public support.

After receiving numerous death threats, the family eventually moved overseas to Qatar so Ahmed could focus on his education.
