Tenants of a low income neighborhood in West Dallas signed home loans after being told to buy their homes or move out.
Property management company HMK Limited is redeveloping the neighborhood and told tenants they could buy their home for $65,000 or leave.
Julian Campos said he didn’t want to move and was one of 17 tenants to buy Thursday.
“I like living here,” said Campos. “I have a lot of friends here.”
Property Manager Khraish Khraish said more tenants are expected to buy homes in days to come.
“We have ten in the pipeline after that,” said Khraish. “And people who will be signing up appointments when they come in to pay their rent.”
Khraish said encouraging home ownership is part of a plan to redevelop the neighborhood. Residents who hadn’t paid rent or couldn’t afford to buy will be evicted.
