Using Cell Phones, Electronic Devices While Driving Now Banned in Denton

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – The City of Denton’s ban on using cell phones and other handheld devices while driving went into effect on Thursday.

The law allows officers to pull drivers over if they’re seen holding their cell phone or similar electronic devices  while the car is moving.

This Denton resident said he hopes it encourages more people to do what he does…pull over to take a phone call.

“I wish more people will do that. Yeah, I’ve seen a lot of accidents caused by people texting or talking on the phone. I even get on my mom’s case if she is texting and driving,” he said.

Another resident said the law is long over due.

“I’ve seen people looking down at their phone everyday. Everyday…all day long…they’re looking down at their phones instead of looking at the road,” he said.

The law states that you can look at your phone or GPS while stopped. A provision this resident said he hopes people will take to heart.

“You can always listen to your GPS, you don’t have to look at it because it tells you where to go,” he said.

Being caught could end with a Class C misdemeanor and a fine of up to $500.
