DPD given ballistic plates for bulletproof vests

Dallas Police Officers are newly equipped with specialized bullet proof vests.

Central Market in Dallas made a $25,000 contribution the the ‘Barbecue Boots and Badges’ campaign for the purchase of fifty ballistic plates. Interim Dallas Police Chief David Pughes said the plates protect against high powered rifles.

“These plates are an additional plate that the Officers place inside their vests that allows for protection of high velocity rifle rounds,” Pughes said. “Unfortunately what we’re seeing in Dallas and across the country is that an increased level of violence is coming from assault rifles. People are buying assault rifles.”

The Barbecue Boots and Badges organization raises money nationwide to help protect first responders.

“We are dedicated to raising the money for adequate ballistic plates which is the state of the art, best ballistic plates to go in the Officer’s vest,” said Founder Maureen Dickey.

Dickey said she has launched the ‘Invest in the Vest’ initiative which specifically raises money to equip every Dallas Police Officer on the streets with ballistic plates for their vest.
