DNA Samples Being Retested, Deficiencies Found in Sexual Assault Kits

Testimony in a number of Dallas County cases is on hold until DNA samples are retested.

According to the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, as many as 25 samples will be retested because of deficiencies found in sexual assault kits.

“There’s something wrong with the sexual assault kits which potentially could give false inclusions,” said Assistant Dallas County District Attorney Mike Snipes.

Snipes said the cases have not yet gone to trial and do not involve any cases that have previously been prosecuted. He believes the results of the retesting may not return until September. Until that time, no cases can go to trial which could lead to inmates being released from jail.

“If a trial date comes up between now and when it’s time to testify, the state is going to say we’re not ready [for trial] in which case they’ll be eligible for a PR bond and can be released from jail,” Snipes said.

It’s believed the deficient kits were used at the end of March.
