Dallas Non-Profit that Helps Homeless Children Raising Money to Keep Therapeutic Gardens Alive

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – Vogel Alcove, a Dallas non-profit that helps children overcome the traumatic effects of homelessness, is raising money to keep their therapeutic garden alive.

The organization’s Karen Hughes said the organization developed an all-natural playground that includes a vegetable, pickle and hydroponic garden.

She said the act of gardening helps these kids heal.

“We also explain to them that we care for them while they’re here and they care for their plant. So, they really take it on and they go and take care of their own plant,” she said.

Hughes said most people don’t realize the broad scope of homelessness.

“They usually think of somebody in one of the tent cities or somebody on the sidewalk. Very rarely do people remember that there’s actually homeless children in this city and in fact Dallas has 38 percent child-poverty rate. These kids didn’t choose this,” she said.

The organization’s goal is to raise at least $20,000 by June 30th.
