DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – A miscalculation in property taxes has led to a shortfall in the Dallas County budget.
At Tuesday’s Dallas County Commissioners Court meeting Budget Director Ryan Brown said capped values weren’t properly subtracted out of the calculation.
“Capped values went from $6 billion the prior year to $14 billion,” said Brown. “So it was a very huge increase and I think that that the calculation didn’t catch it.”
Brown said the mechanisms and controls have been put into place to ensure a better estimation in the future. The miscalculation was estimated at $5.5 million
Brown also told County Commissioners that the county has experienced a 3 million dollar reduction in revenue.
“I do believe that you’re in agreement that we shouldn’t be looking at adding additional positions unless it’s self-liquidating, mandated, or fundamentally critical to the mission that we’re doing,” Brown said to Commissioners at the meeting.
He said that financial cutbacks are necessary because of the shortfall.
