LGBTQ Groups Plan to Fight Bathroom Bill, Other Legislation During Special Session

AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF News) – Days before Texas Legislators will address several bills related to transgender people in Texas, LGBTQ groups are speaking out against the special session.

One of the issues on the table is the so-called “Bathroom Bill”, which would only allow a person to use the restroom specific to the gender on their birth certificate.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Texas’ Chase Strangio said Texas politicians are using transgender legislation as a form of political posturing.

“They are hell bent on using transgender children and adults as scapegoats to push their political extremist ideology. They are trying to score political points with lies and scare tactics,” he said.

Chuck Smith, CEO of Equality Texas, agrees and said he thinks the bill is discriminatory.

“Our elected officials are stooping to new lows in their attempts to pass discriminatory legislation. The sole purpose of which is to stigmatize and demonize trangender people. We will challenge their lies at every turn”, he said.

Several groups plan to protest during the special session. The Human Rights Campaign’s JoDee Winterhof said their voices will be heard.

“As the Special Session looms, the Human Rights Campaign and with our partners will be ready to fight any and all attack on transgender Texans with all of our partners on the ground,” she said.

The Special Session starts July 18.
