City of Wylie Approves Property Tax Reduction

WYLIE (WBAP/KLIF) – Another Collin County city has reduced its property taxes.

The Wylie City Council has unanimously approved a 6.7 cent reduction. Mayor Eric Hogue says the cut is in large part a result of the booming real estate market in Collin County.
“The real estate market has gone crazy here,” Mayor Hogue said. “So we know the people are coming with all the industries that are coming into the county. That’s had an impact on the real estate market. And because of that the appraisals have gone through the roof.”

Since 2013, the property taxes in Wylie have been reduced by close to 12 cents. In the past, Wylie has been known for its high taxes.

“Wylie does have high taxes, there’s no question about that,” said Mayor Hogue. “But we also know that in Wylie we don’t have a lot of industry. And so those fire engines that cost a million dollars, the citizens pay for those. And that’s always been a challenge in our community.”

Hogue says compared to other cities, taxes are still a little high in Wylie, but the city is making progress.
