DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The City of Dallas is preparing for evacuees as residents of South Texas escape the path of Hurricane Harvey.
Three Dallas rec centers will be available to be used as shelters. Tommie Allen, Samuel Grand, and Walnut Hill rec centers can hold more than 1,000 people combined. The Dallas Convention Center will be used as a last resort to hold evacuees. It can hold up to 5,000 people.
“There are a lot of places that people can go to between the coast and the Dallas area,” said Dallas Emergency Management Coordinator, Rocky Vaz. “But we need to be ready.”
Vaz said his staff learned many lessons after taking in evacuees after Hurricane Katrina.
“Over the last seven years we have met several times,” said Vaz. “There were lessons learned and we have met several times in the last six months to discuss our master shelter plan.”
The City of Dallas has several local organizations, such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army, standing by with materials and food to be taken to the shelters. Local leaders are in constant contact with state officials to verify needs locally and state wide and how to be of assistance in the aftermath of the storm.
