Evacuees Arriving to Dallas Shelters

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas shelters are filling up with Hurricane Harvey evacuees who are unsure when they will be able to return home.

Roberto Torres is staying at a Dallas Red Cross shelter at night and searching for temporary work during the day. He says he left his apartment in the Houston area because he cant’ work in the flood conditions.

“I do highway construction so not even my supervisor can get out,” said Torres. “Everything is on hold.”

Torres says he hopes to go home this weekend but is doubtful he’ll be able to.

Officials with the Red Cross say they expect more Hurricane Harvey evacuees to arrive at Dallas shelters throughout the week. Georgia Duncan is volunteering the the Samuell Grand shelter and says it’s taking people a long time to make their way out of south and central Texas.
“I talked to a family who came here that said it took them nine hours to get here from Houston,” said Duncan.

Volunteers say it’s possible that the three Dallas shelters could consolidate once the convention center is open to evacuees.
