DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — It shouldn’t surprise Texans to learn that people in the rest of the country consider us braggarts. They tend to be skeptical about grandiose claims of the many wonders unique to the Lone Star State, and nowhere is that skepticism more apparent than in the Big Apple.
New York City firefighters in Houston to help with relief efforts had their doubts when Houstonians began boasting about Whataburger. Now one of them, at least, has eaten his words.
NYC Fire Lt. Thomas Carrera had his first Whataburger Saturday and was effusive in his praise.
Carrera can be seen expressing his doubts on a video that quickly went viral.
“These guys want to tell me this is the burger, this is the official Texas burger,” Carrera says. “I don’t think so, but we’re going to see right now.”
Then he bit into it and his face lit up with pure joy.
“Mmmmm,” Carrera says. “That is a good burger.”
Turning to the camera he gives a thumbs-up and adds, “Unbelievable.”
Carrera says he’s now a loyal Whataburger fan.
And he thanked Texans for, “showing me the light.”
