DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) — Volunteer groups, much of them faith based, are leading the charge when it comes to relief efforts for Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is a network of churches and civic clubs that spans nationwide.
Each member of the network focuses on a particular area or city within the community impacted.
That way when a disaster strikes, each group can spring into action without anything going to waste.
VOAD works with FEMA during recovery efforts … not for them. Administrator Brock Long says FEMA couldn’t cover an area the size of the damage in Texas without VOAD. He says, “Helping Texas overcome this disaster is going to be far greater than FEMA coordinating a mission of the entire federal government.”
A list of members of VOAD as well as places some background about the groups can be found here..
