DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – An abandoned baby left at a Dallas 7-Eleven convenience store prompted Dallas Fire Rescue to better mark its fire stations as ‘Safe Baby Sites.’
The ‘Safe Baby Site’ program requires fire stations to have signage indicating that babies up to 60 days old can be dropped there with no questions asked. Firefighter Jason Evans said that more than half of Dallas fire stations are without signs, but are now getting more.
“With city money we were able to make an emergency purchase of 40 signs to accommodate for the missing signs from more than 35 of our stations,” Evans said.
The fire station closest to the North Dallas 7-11 where the baby was left over the weekend did not have a visible sign. Many stations took their signs down last year by mistake when funding for the Safe Place Program, aimed at abused teenagers, lost funding.
“The Safe Babies signs and the Safe Place signs were both inadvertently removed and discarded of,” Evans said.
By next week, all Dallas Fire Stations are expected to be displaying the signs.
