Rockport (WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott and country music singer George Strait met with victims of Hurricane Harvey Thursday in Rockport. Strait owns a home in Rockport, along the Texas Coast, about 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi.
“We like it just the way it was, and we want to get it back there,” Strait told a crowd outside a hardware store. “I want to go fishing. I wore my fishing shirt; I’m ready!”
Abbott says the Texas General Land Office will review grant proposals to help businesses and homeowners rebuild.
“We’re going to be here every day until we get every last house rebuilt, until we get people back in school,” he said.
Abbott also met with acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke. After the group met with the crowd outside the hardware store, Strait spent about an hour signing autographs.
“It’s so good to see businesses already open again,” he said. “I was really surprised. I came last week. I knew it was bad, but when I saw just how bad it was, that made me sad.”
Abbott, Duke and Land Commissioner George P. Bush also met with the mayor of Rockport, the Aransas County judge and other local elected officials. The group also met with Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp, who is leading the governor’s Commission to Rebuild Texas.
