Dallas (WBAP/KLIF News) – As the State Fair of Texas prepares to open for 2017, Dallas and Dallas Area Rapid Transit police are preparing security for the event. The departments will not say how many officers will be in place at Fair Park but say officers will come other parts of the city and work overtime to provide security.
“We’re always looking at new issues, new trends as far as safety and security,” says Dallas Police Deputy Chief William Humphrey. “We do update and look at anything new we need to do to make sure things are safe.”
Police will patrol Fair Park on foot, horseback and from golf carts and helicopters.
This year, Dallas police will use 35 metal detectors at entrances instead of “wands” to check visitors. Humphrey says the change will help lines move more quickly.
“We have done a lot of planning and a lot of security meetings,” Humphrey says. “The State Fair will be one of the safest places in Dallas for the next month.”
Inspectors examined rides before they arrived at Fair Park. Inspections will continue throughout the fair.
The State Fair of Texas opens Friday morning.
