
FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) — The Fort Worth School Board has declared its official support to a resolution defending the continuing education of children who are in the country illegally.
By a vote of 8-0 Tuesday night the board echoed Superintendent Kent Scribner’s Facebook support of the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals.
President Donald Trump has announced plans to end the DACA program in six months but has urged Congress to come up with a permanent replacement for the program that was created by an executive order by then-President Barack Obama.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram quotes District 1 school board member Jacinto Ramos, who called the trustees “UndocuAllies” in using their positions to stand up for a vulnerable population.
“They are asking for bold leadership to stand with them in solidarity,” said Ramos.
The Fort Worth ISD has more than 86,000 enrolled students. Studies have concluded there are about 7,000 young immigrants in Tarrant County.
