Some Dallas Schools Could Be Renamed Faster Than Expected

Dallas (WBAP/KLIF) – The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees votes tonight on a proposal to jump-start the process of renaming four elementary schools that bear the names of confederate generals. The board has set its sights on the schools named for Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Albert Sidney Johnston, and William L. Cabell.

Its proposal would hear recommended changes by the end of November, and vote on them in mid-December. When the issue was brought before the Board earlier this month, the nine-members unanimously decided that the changes should be made, and quickly.

Lauren Silva-Loflin is a mother of a DISD student and said she understands the topic is sensitive and deserves careful consideration.

“I think that there is an argument that there is nostalgia associated with the name and change makes people nervous and we have to understand that and work with people recognizing that nervousness,” she said.

Silva-Loflin said she understands that this is a polarizing issue, which can bring out the best and the worst in people.

“There are bad players people who have the wrong intentions…that tend to seep their way into communities when this type of issue happens,” she said.

Thursday night’s meeting will be held at the Conrad High School auditorium, beginning at 6:00 PM. In a normal school year no name is changed until the summer recess.
