Senator Cornyn Offers Bill to Strengthen Background Check System

(WBAP/KLIF) – Senator John Cornyn says the background check system, when it came to the gunman who killed worshipers at the Sutherland Springs church, failed and failed terribly.

Cornyn is introducing legislation to strengthen the system in wake of the South Texas church shooting.

Cornyn brought up the gunman’s Air Force court martial that was not uploaded into the system.

“This should have prohibited him from ever purchasing a gun in the first place. But, we know it didn’t,” Cornyn said on the Senate floor Tuesday.

Cornyn’s bill would ensure all federal departments, including the Department of Defense, upload the required conviction records into the national database.

He also wants to better understand why existing law did not work leading up to the shooting where 26 people were killed.
