Sherin Mathews 4-Year-Old Sister Will Leave Foster Care to Live with Extended Family Member

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – There are new developments in the custody for the family of slain Richardson toddler Sherin Mathews.

A family court judge ruled Monday that Sherin’s four-year-old sister will be able to leave foster care to live with an extended family member.

Child Protective Services’ Marissa Gonzales said the mother, Sini Mathews, and her family have been cooperative.

“Well a home study was done on family members. We’re just waiting on everyone to be in agreement that that’s the place for her. Then she can be moved to the family member’s home,” she said.

Once the child is placed in the home, Gonzales said the length of time is uncertain.

“At this point everything is temporary. The final decision will come from a judge and we don’t know when that will be,” said Gonzales.

Wesley Mathews, who is in jail on an injury to a child charge related to Sherin’s death, asked the court not to severe his parental rights.

Sini Mathews, Sherin’s adoptive mother, has not been charged in the case.

Wesley Mathews’ civil attorney David Kleckner said his client wants Sini to get custody of their daughter while his criminal case plays out

The cause of death for Sherin is still pending, who was missing for two weeks before her body was found in a culvert less than a mile from her home October 22nd.

Police arrested him last month after he changed his story about the way Sherin died.

Mathews initially told police he placed his adopted daughter outside at 3 a.m. as punishment for not drinking her milk.

He eventually told investigators that he had “physically assisted” Sherin while drinking her milk and she choked. Mathews also admitted that he removed her body from the home once she stopped breathing.

The hearing to decide who will have permanent custody is set for November 29th.
