DENTON, Texas (WBAP/KLIF News) – At least 50 students are now displaced after part of the floor in a third-story apartment collapsed during a homecoming party at an apartment complex at the University of North Texas.
Denton police say the accident happened at the Ridge at North Texas around 2 a.m. Sunday.
The Denton Fire Department’s Chief Brian Glenn says about 100 people were jumping up and down dancing while at a party in the unit when the floor in one room collapsed.
He said people living in 12 of the units were displaced due to water damage from the sprinkler systems and are living in a nearby hotel while the property is being inspected for safety reasons.
“So far, there’s been nothing obvious seen. They’re also waiting on a construction engineer to take a look at it to see if they can add anything to that while they’re certifying the building as being safe,” he said.
Glenn said he’s hopeful that the students can return to their homes once the property has been assessed.
“We should be able to get people back in nine of the units that weren’t directly effected,” he said.
There’s no word on a time table as to when the students will be allowed to return.
