DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Some of the oldest lawsuits in Texas have been settled, following a vote by the Dallas City Council.
The lawsuits were filed in 1994 by first responders who said they were owed money from raises passed in a 1979 referendum. They said they were never paid. The case lingered for more than 20 years, and the city council voted this week to pay a $61 million dollar settlement.
“It’s time to do the right thing,” said Council Member Kevin Felder. “Let’s settle this case and move on.”
Council Member Lee Kleinman said that with this settlement and the recent Police and Fire Pension plan, local associations are getting what they feel they are owed.
“These unions have stuck it to the tax payers for $125 million and we’re all just saying great,” Kleinman said.
The majority of the council, including Kleinman, felt it best to settle instead of the cases being taken to trial.
