Denton ISD Votes to Rename Robert E. Lee Elementary

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF) – Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Denton will have a new name at the beginning of next school year.

The name change comes amid controversy about monuments and places being named after confederate leaders. Mario Zavalla with Denton ISD said the Board of Trustees voted to rename Lee Elementary to Alexander Elementary School.

“That will be for the beginning of the 2018-2019 school,” said Zavalla. “That reflects a tradition the board likes to follow which is naming facilities after educators who impacted the community.”

Alice Alexander was an educator in the school district for more than 40 years. Her father was a Principal in the school district for an African-American school prior to desegregation.
