DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – In advance of the Thanksgiving holiday, Senator John Cornyn and Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings handed out cold-weather clothing to Dallas’ homeless guests at The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center Tuesday, to highlight its first annual ‘Bundle Up at the Bridge’ clothing drive.
Before volunteering, Senator Cornyn toured the Bridge’s facilities and met with its guests.
“He’s a leader in mental health, he’s a leader in making sure that we have affordable housing in the City of Dallas,” said Mayor Rawlings of Senator Cornyn. “And so we are honored to have him as a partner and to have him down here pressing the flesh with us a little bit.”
Senator Cornyn said that after speaking with the Mayor and officials at the shelter, he learned that one of the biggest issues people are facing in Dallas is affordable housing.
“Right now in the Senate we are working on a tax bill that has a provision for low income tax credits,” said Cornyn. “If I understand the Mayor correctly, it’s really important that we not only keep that but also expand on that.”
Both Cornyn and Rawlings said that addressing mental health issues can also be beneficial to the homeless population.
