DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – The first U.S. baby born as a result of a uterine transplant is being praised as a medical milestone.
The baby was born at Baylor University Medical in Dallas after extensive research. Doctors throughout the Baylor Scott & White Health system led the way on the transplant and delivery. A baby was born previously in Sweden after the transplant, but never before in the United States. Dr. Robert Gumby delivered the baby boy.
“There was something so exciting about this because the patients were so excited,” Dr. Gumby said.
Doctors said in a Monday press conference that for women born without a functioning uterus, the transplant is the only way they can carry a pregnancy. Now, there is proof it can be successful. Doctors credited a collaborative effort.
“This is a world project,” said Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Gregory McKenna. “This has already opened up unbelievable collaborations. And the fact the the Sweden team was willing to come here for our first four transplants was just unbelievable.”
Doctors said the recent birth is a milestone, but there remains much to learn and accomplish.
