DENVER (WBAP/KLIF News) – A deputy killed in an ambush in Denver, Colorado on Sunday had ties to North Texas.
29-year-old Zack Parrish grew up in Houston and graduated from Dallas Baptist University before he moved to Colorado.
DBU President Dr. Adam Wright released a statement that read in part.
“The Dallas Baptist University family is grief stricken by the tragic news of our dear alumni, Zack Parrish.”
Parish leaves behind a wife and two children. A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family.
The shooting happened early Sunday morning after officers had responded to a noise complaint coming from the suspect’s apartment.
Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Matthew Riehl, barricaded himself inside a bedroom and allegedly opened fire as deputies entered the apartment.
Spurlock said Riehl fired over 100 rounds at officers.
Riehl was eventually shot and killed by police. Two civilians were also shot in the gunfire.
