DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – A number of shelters in the Metroplex have opened or extended their hours to accommodate the homeless as the temperatures hover below freezing.
Margaret McKoin with Union Gospel Mission Dallas said the shelter on Irving Boulevard is open 24/7 to take people in from the cold.
“I believe it will hold up to 650 individuals at any given time and maybe more if they put cots in other areas during inclement weather,” she said.
The temperatures plummeted so drastically that area first responders have been urging North Texans to limit their time outdoors and wear layers of clothing.
McKoin said many shelters are stocked with food and supplies for the homeless.
“A cot with blankets. They have socks and coats and of course food and warm beverages,” she said.
Another temporary shelter is currently open at Oaklawn United Methodist Church until temperatures begin to rise above freezing.
Anytime temperatures drop below 32 degrees, most shelters stays open around the clock.
