(WBAP/KLIF) – Senator John Cornyn has outlined his top priorities for the U.S. Senate for 2018.
After funding the government and avoiding a shutdown, the senior senator from Texas wants to the attention focused on disaster relief.
“I’m going to work with my colleagues to ensure that Texans whose homes, schools, roads and workplaces were affected by the storm receive the help they deserve and so desperately need,” Cornyn said on the Senate Floor.
Also on the list is what to do with DACA recipients and enforcing the country’s immigration laws.
“These are certainly the most sympathetic group of people who we need to address,” Cornyn said. “I think we can and we will in a compassionate and honest sort of way.”
Cornyn also discussed funding a program involving foreign intelligence that helps protect the national security of the United States.
Lastly on the priority list is pushing legislation Cornyn authored late last year that strengthens federal laws on reporting people who should not be allowed to purchase firearms. A failure within the system allowed for a former military service member to purchase weapons used in the Sutherland Springs, Texas church shooting in November of 2017.
