ARLINGTON (WBAP/KLIF News) – Governor Greg Abbott said he has no intention of backing out of his role as grand marshal at the MLK Day Parade in Arlington, despite backlash from several North Texas organizations.
“I am making clear that as governor, I represent every Texan. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live, what your background is, I am going to be representing you and coming to you and your community,” he said.
The Arlington branch of the NAACP released a statement that said Abbott’s role in the parade is an insult to Dr. King because of his support of what it calls discriminatory policies.
Critics cite the fact that Abbott helped draft and support the sanctuary cities bill.
They’re also critical of Abbott’s support of redistricting plans and voter ID laws that they say intentionally discriminate.
“I am looking forward to participating,” said Abbott.
The Next Generation Action Network said it plans to protest Abbott’s involvement.
