PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – The group “Our Plano, One Plano” presented the City of Plano Wednesday with more than 4,000 signatures on a petition to recall councilman Tom Harrison from office.
The group wants him to step down or face a recall election after he made a Facebook post that said “Share if you think Trump should ban Islam in American schools.”
“We reject this king of bigotry, and discrimination,” said Our Plano, One Plano Spokesperson, Ann Bacchus.
Harrison deleted the post and apologized but said he will not step down.
“The apology was done for one reason,” Harrison told WBAP’s Rick Roberts Show. “If I go into a movie theater and step on somebody’s toe I say excuse me.”
Harrison said he believes he is the subject of a smear campaign.
“Every time the Mayor gets a chance, he comes after me,” said Harrison.
He said he won’t resign and believes the same people who elected him will re-elect him. Just under 2,800 signatures were needed to prompt a recall election. Now, the City Secretary has five days to verify the signatures and is expected to present the petition to City Council Monday.
If the signatures check out, the council would likely call for a recall election in November.
