Dallas-Fort Worth (WBAP/KLIF) – The U.S. Supreme Court Supreme Court hear a case beginning tomorrow to determine whether Texas needs to draw new electoral maps to even the playing field for minority voters.
A district court ruled last year that two congressional districts and nine statehouse districts — 5 of them in North Texas — were intentionally drawn to discriminate against African Americans and Latinos.
Attorney General Ken Paxton told WFAA’s ‘Inside Texas Politics’ that he expects the SCOTUS to side with the state on maps that have been used for several years.
“We appealed directly to the US Supreme Court and we got a stay on what the district court had done. You’ve got to remember these are maps we’ve operated under since 2013.”
Experts tell the Dallas Morning News, the ramifications of the 7-year old case could be massive for North Texans.
It could drastically change politics in the state and possible open the door for Democrats to win more state and Congressional races.
