TYLER, Texas (AP) — A Texas nurse accused of intentionally injuring patients has been charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
William Davis, 34, was indicted by grand jury last week, the Tyler Morning Telegraph reported. The registered nurse was arrested in April as a suspect in the death of Christopher Greenaway, 47, who was recovering from a heart procedure at the Louis and Peaches Owen Heart Hospital in Tyler.
An arrest affidavit also accused Davis of injuring six other patients, one of whom died, at Christus Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler. The hospital is part of the same health system as the Owen Heart Hospital. Police haven’t identified the second patient who died and it’s unclear whether Davis will be charged in relation to the death.
Authorities allege Davis introduced air into the circulatory systems of patients recovering from heart surgery, causing stroke-like symptoms.
Surveillance video footage shows Davis entering patients’ rooms on the Christus campus, according to an arrest warrant. The patients suffered “unexpected medical emergencies” a short time after he left the patient rooms. Two of the patients identified in the case, a 58-year-old man and a 63-year-old woman, were left in vegetative conditions, according to the warrant.
The incidents date back to June 2017, with the most recent occurring in January. Davis had been working a night shift when each patient suffered an emergency, according to the warrant. He was fired in February.
Davis is being held in the Smith County Jail on a $2 million bond.
