Sizzling Pavement Heat Warnings

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) –The old adage “It”s so hot, you could fry an egg on that sidewalk” is literally true, say forecasters with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.   Meteorologist Lee Carlaw warns children and dogs should not be allowed to walk on either light colored sidewalks or darker road surfaces, even hours after triple digit temperatures have cooled down.

Carlaw says not only do light colored sidewalks rise to a typical 140 degrees Farenheit during excessive heat spells like the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex is experiencing,  dark road surfaces can climb to 160 Farenheit quite quickly.  Further, Carlaw warns pavement and cement hold the heat longer than other mediums, so danger can exist even when the temperature falls and it feels cooler to us.

Carlaw reminds us of the dangers of triple digit temperatures, even when we think we are accustomed to sizzling heat.  We’re reminded to take breaks at least every 30 minutes; drink plenty of fluids, seek shade, and find air conditioning or other ways to cool down such as cool showers if we must be in the brutal heat.
