MCALLEN, TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is calling for an end to red light cameras across the state.
In a 21-page report issued Monday Abbott listed policies he would pursue and support if he’s re-elected in November. On the subject of cameras at intersections the report summary says: “Red light cameras are automated devices for red light traffic enforcement. They are expensive, studies indicate that they may increase accidents where deployed, and they pose constitutional issues.
“Texas should ban the use of these devices by preempting local authority to utilize them.”
Arlington voters turned off the cameras in their city three years ago. Fort Worth activists began an effort to do the same but failed to get enough signatures to put the issue on the ballot.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports other top issues in Abbott’s report include cracking down on gangs, disrupting human trafficking and smuggling, keeping peace officers safe and “strengthening the rights of Texas drivers.”
