Tens of Thousands Turn Out for the 51st Annual YMCA Dallas Turkey Trot

DALLAS  (WBAP/KLIF News) – 25,000 runners and 40,000 spectators turned out Thursday morning for the 51st annual YMCA Dallas Turkey Trot which raises money for the organization’s scholarship and youth program.

YMCA Dallas’ Sarah Byrom said it helps people get into the Thanksgiving spirit.

“I think what makes the Turkey Trot so special  really a celebration of friends and family and fellowship. Everybody comes out in the morning and they feel really good what they’re doing. They feel really good about supporting the YMCA,” she said.

The event boasts a 5K run/walk, 8-mile run, 1K junior trot and a holiday 5K series.

Runners from 47 states and three countries were represented today in what Byrom said is the largest Turkey Trot in the Metroplex and the country.

Mike Daniels ran the 8-mile race.

“Oh it feels so good its so much fun it’s the only way to start Thanksgiving. You got to get that appetite ready too,” he said.

Byrom echoed that sentiment.

“It’s a beautiful day. They get to start it off in a healthy way then they get to go home and kind of eat what they want and not feel so guilty,” she said.
