GARLAND (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Garland community is rallying around a local family devastated by the recent death of a four-year-old girl from the flu.
Ashanti Grinage died last Thursday after battling flu and type-a pneumonia in the hospital. Her mother ended up in the hospital as well with the same symptoms but is said to be in recovery.
A GoFundMe page set up to help the family cover funeral expenses has already reached more than $10,000 of it’s $15,000 goal with many posting messages of support for the family along with donations on the campaign’s page.
A woman who said she’s Ashanti’s aunt wrote a heartfelt message on the page.
“Although we are not ready and it’s hard to accept we know our family has gained a beautiful angel in heaven,” she wrote.
Martel Grinage, Ashanti’s father, tearfully told WFAA TV he can’t believe his little girl is gone.
“I used to tell her that I am here and Daddy’s not going to let anything bad happen to you but see…I feel like I failed because I am not even 30 and I am about to bury my little girl,” he said.
Ashanti is Dallas County’s first pediatric out of the seven flu-related deaths this year.
