Fort Worth Police Association Speaks Out Against Firing of Officer Involved in Shooting Incident

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Fort Worth Police Association is criticizing Chief Joel Fitzgerald after an officer was fired for what the association said was a brief an investigation into a shooting incident.

Officer Lina Mino was fired last week following a five-day investigation into an incident involving her firing a gun at a car that sped away from her after a traffic stop.

The driver was a wanted felon and no one was injured.

In a press conference Tuesday morning, FWPA President Manny Ramirez said his organization strongly disagrees with the decision.

“Our community deserves a safe city and a community that has a department that is motivated to fight crime and apprehend wanted felons not a department that is standing still paralyzed by a political environment,” he said.

Ramirez questioned why Mino received a punishment he felt was different than some of her counterparts.

“There are officers in the detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain even command ranks that have taken the same action and acted in the same manner as Officer Mino. Some have received no more than a verbal counseling session or a written reprimand for discipline,” he said.

Ramirez said Mino was fired seven hours before being with the department for a year, which would have given hear a chance to appeal.

Chief Fitzgerald is expected to comment later today.
